•
Whiskers Abroad is a lively and charming travelogue featuring a trip to Japan shared by two main characters, Audrey and Ashi, who alternate recounting their versions of events. Audrey, having won the chance to write a magazine article about traveling in Japan, takes along her cat, Ashi. Over the course of a twelve-day trip, the pair visit Tokyo, Wakayama, Shirahama, Kyoto, and Miura Peninsula. Food is of great interest to both, as they sample typical Japanese dishes from ramen to sushi to tuna specialties. They also explore Japanese culture, including food markets, a family farm, temples, and Tokyo nightlife. Adventures abound, from Audrey losing Ashi in the fish market to Ashi slipping out of the hotel at night to go to a cat caf?, where he meets an alluring feline. Audrey is still trying to find her place in the universe, while Ashi believes Audrey would sink beneath the waves were he not present to rescue her time and again. •
During the first half of the twentieth century, Japanese immigrants entered Brazil by the tens of thousands. In more recent decades that flow has been reversed: more than 200,000 Japanese-Brazilians and their families have relocated to Japan. Examining these significant but rarely studied transnational movements and the experiences of Japanese-Brazilians, the essays in Searching for Home Abroad rethink complex issues of ethnicity and national identity. The contributorsーwho represent a number of nationalities and disciplines themselvesーanalyze how the original Japanese immigrants, their descendants in Brazil, and the Japanese-Brazilians in Japan sought to fit into the culture of each country while confronting both prejudice and discrimination.

The concepts of home and diaspora are engaged and debated throughout the volume. Drawing on numerous sourcesーoral histories, interviews, private papers, films, myths, and musicーthe contributors highlight the rol...

 •
"Anyone want to go to Japan and teach English for a half a year?"

That's how it all started. I was 38 years old, and a returning student in a Master's Degree in English program.

The bulk of this book is a daily journal/blog of my adventures while getting TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certified and my trip to Japan, where I taught English to students of all ages.

I did a lot of things right, and I also did a lot of things in the most difficult way imaginable. I'd never traveled outside the USA before, and spoke nearly no Japanese when I started. This book has it all, exciting adventures traveling to far-off cities, misadventures on mountaintops, and even the occasional rant. There's good and bad, but it's all real, and written when it happened.

If you've ever considered going overseas to teach or just are curious about what it's like to live there as an American, this book is for you. I went to Japan, but many of the pr...
