•
The contemporary management of patients with cancers of the head and neck is under careful scrutiny and major changes are being introduced in order to improve the potenti al not only for long-term control but also for less in the way of disfiguring and distres sing complications associated with the treatment programs. In 1988, the American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 42400 new cases of malignant tumors of the head and neck diagnosed with 12 850 deaths. In general, the prognosis for patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck re gion depends upon the site of origin, the local and regional extent of the tumor, the Kar nofsky status of the patient as well as the patient's general medical condition. The poten tial for cure for early stage tumors is extremely high particularly for those lesions involving the vocal cord, oral cavity, and the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. Major advances have been made in the management of head and neck cancer by the innova...

 •
Surgery for head neck cancer has evolved greatly in the recent years. Appropriate surgical resection with negative margins still remain corner-stone in achieving good oncological outcome. This atlas proposes a new concept of " The Compartment Surgery " to achieve negative margins in third dimensions which is the problem area in majority of cases. Reconstructive techniques have evolved vastly in the recent years with use of microvascular free flaps and this has significantly improved the functional outcome. Performing each step in appropriate manner cumulatively enables us to perform more complex procedures. Theme of this atlas revolves around this fact.

This atlas on head and neck cancers takes a fresh stylistic approach where each surgical procedure is described in a step-wise manner through labeled high-resolution images with minimal incorporation of text. This allows the surgeons to rapidly revise the operative steps of a procedure within minutes just before they ...

 •
Squamous cell cancers of the head and neck (SCCHN), also known as head and neck cancers (HNC) encompass malignancies of the oral cavity, larynx, nasopharynx and pharynx, and are diagnosed in over 500,000 patients worldwide each year, accounting for 5% of all malignancies. It is estimated that approximately 50,000 patients develop head and neck cancer annually in the United States, of whom approximately 50% succumb to this cancer. For most cases of SCCHN, treatment is multimodal, often combining surgery or irradiation with chemotherapy; even successfully treated patients frequently experience durable and severe side effects. Improving cure rates and reducing chronic morbidity are urgent clinical needs for head and neck cancer. However, in contrast to cancer types such as breast or prostate that have been much studied and have well-defined biology, until recently, relatively few researchers investigated the molecular basis of HNC, making it difficult to design targeted treatments...

 •
Malignancies involving structures of the head and neck frequently impact the most fundamental aspects of human existence, namely, those functions related to voice and speech production, eating, and swallowing. Abnormalities in voice production, and in some instances its complete loss, are common following treatment for laryngeal (voice box) cancer. Similarly, speech, eating, and swallowing may be dramatically disrupted in those where oral structures (e.g., the tongue, jaw, hard palate, pharynx, etc.) are surgically ablated to eliminate the cancer. Consequently, the range and degree of deficits that may be experienced secondary to the treatment of head and neck cancer (HNCa) are often substantial. This need is further reinforced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who have estimated that the number of individuals who will be newly diagnosed with HNCa will now double every 10 years. This estimate becomes even more critical given that an increasing number of those wh...
