•
Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin was French painter of still-lifes and domestic scenes remarkable for their intimate realism and tranquil atmosphere and the luminous quality of their paint. For his still lifes he chose modest objects (Le Buffet, 1728), and for his genre paintings unpretentious events (Lady Sealing a Letter, 1733). He also executed some fine portraits, especially the pastels of his last years. He was nominated to the Royal Academy of Painting in 1728. Despite the triumphs of his early and middle life, Chardin's last years were clouded, both in his private life and in his career. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that he was rediscovered by a handful of French critics, including the brothers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, and collectors. Nowadays Chardin is considered the greatest still-life painter of the 18th century, and his canvases are coveted by the world's most distinguished museums and collections.

 •
Guido Reni was an Italian painter of high-Baroque style. He was a typically classical academic but he was also one of the most elegant painters in the chronicles of art history. He was constantly seeking an absolute, rarefied perfection which he measured against classical Antiquity and Raphael. Because of this, over the years the Bolognese painter has been in and out of fashion, depending on the tastes of the times. He was very popular in eighteenth century, bit in the nineteenth century the violent criticism of John Ruskin broke down his reputation. However even his enemies cannot deny the exceptional technical quality of his work nor the clarity of his supremely assured and harmonious brushwork. He praised the clearness of light, the perfection of the body, and lively color. Toward the end of his life, Reni modified his style. His paintings became airy as to seem insubstantial and were almost completely monochrome.

 •
Jean-Honor? Fragonard was a French Rococo painter and printmaker whose style was remarkable by cheerfulness and hedonism. His most popular artworks are genre paintings conveying an atmosphere of intimacy and veiled eroticism. Fragonard has been ranked with Watteau as one of the two great lyrical painters of the analytical 18th century in France. An extraordinary active artist, he produced more than 550 paintings, several thousand drawings, and 35 etchings. His style, based primarily on that of Rubens, was express, forceful, and effortless, never tensed or fussy like that of so many of his contemporaries. Although the greater part of his active life was passed during the neoclassical period, he continued to paint in a Rococo manner until shortly before the French Revolution.

 •
Vasily Polenov was a Russian landscape painter associated with the Peredvizhniki movement of realist artists. He studied under Pavel Chistyakov and in the Imperial Academy of Arts . As a pensioner of the Academy he traveled to Germany, Italy, France, painted historical and genre pictures and portraits. But most attractive for him was landscape painting on plein air. He studied the works of French landscape painters, especially those by the Barbizon school. Polenov concentrated on painting landscapes in the realist tradition of Aleksey Savrasov and Fyodor Vasilyev. He attempted to impart the silent poetry of Russian nature, related to daily human life. Polenov was the first to introduce the principles of ‘European influence’ in Russia, these were the basics of plein air painting: clean and bright colors, colored shadows, free strokes and freshness of color combined with artistic finish of composition. His work had a great impact on further development of Russian landscape painti...

 •
Th?odore Rousseau was French landscape painter. His aims, style and development are characteristic of the Barbizon School, of which he was one of the major members. Like others in the group he suffered great suffering as a result of his attempts to introduce a non-academic landscape style. He was known as 'le grand refuse', because of his systematic exclusion from the Paris Salon between 1836 and 1841 and his no participation between 1842 and 1849. His pictures are always grave in character, with an air of exquisite melancholy. They are well finished when they profess to be completed pictures, but Rousseau spent so much time developing his subjects that his absolutely completed works are comparatively few. He left many canvases with parts of the picture realized in detail and with the remainder somewhat indistinct; and also a huge number of sketches and water-color drawings. His pen work in monochrome on paper is rare.

The set consists of 82 plates in etching reinforced with aquatint, and their humour is constantly overshadowed by an element of nightmare. They savagely and satirically attack on social customs and abuses of the Church, with elements of the macabre in scenes of witchcraft and diabolism. Equally dramatic, more savage and chilling are the sixty-five etchings The Disasters of War (1810-14) - nightmare scenes, depicting atrocities committed by both French and Spanish. They were not published until 1863, 35 years after his death.

In his last years Goya took up the new medium of lithography (in his series the Bulls of Bordeaux), while his paintings illustrate his progress towards a style which foreshadowed that of the Impressionis...

 •
Félix Vallotton was a Swiss painter and printmaker associated with group Les Nabis. By the end of his life he had completed over 1700 paintings and about 200 prints, in addition to hundreds of drawings and several sculptures. His earliest paintings, chiefly portraits, are firmly rooted in the academic tradition. He was influenced by post-Impressionism, Symbolism, and especially by the Japanese woodcut. During the 1890s, when Vallotton was closely allied with the avant-garde, his paintings reflected the style of his woodcuts, with flat areas of color, hard edges, and simplification of detail. His subjects included genre scenes, portraits and nudes. Vallotton's paintings of the post-Nabi period found admirers, and were generally respected for their truthfulness and their technical qualities, but the severity of his style was frequently criticized, and has a further parallel in the work of Edward Hopper.

S. Cavalry. His style was naturalistic, sometimes impressionistic, and usually veered away from the ethnographic realism of earlier Western artists such as George Catlin. His focus was firmly on the people and animals of the West, with landscape usually of secondary importance, unlike the members and descendants of the Hudson River School, such as Frederic Edwin Church, Albert Bierstadt, and Thomas Moran, who glorified the vastness of the West and the dominance of nature over man. The galloping horse became Remington’s signature subject, copied and interpreted by many Western artists who followed him. •
Vasily Vereshchagin was one of the most famous Russian battle painters and one of the first Russian artists to be widely recognized abroad. The graphic nature of his realist scenes led many of them to never be printed or exhibited. Vereshchagin attended the St. Petersburg Academy and studied in Paris. Devoting his life to travel, he acquired subjects for paintings from on-the-spot impressions in the Caucasus, in the Crimea, along the Danube River, and in Turkistan with the Russian army. In the Balkans during the Russo-Turkish War (in which he was wounded), Vereshchagin was provided with the themes for some of his famous war pictures. He also painted in Syria and in Palestine and between 1885 and 1903 traveled in Russia, the United States, and Japan. He died during the Russo-Japanese War, aboard the flagship of Admiral Makarov.

 •
Toulouse-Lautrec painted quickly, using its neutral tone and conveying action and atmosphere in a few economical strokes. In later years graphic works took precedence and his paintings were often studies for lithographs.

In Toulouse-Lautrec’s drawings of dancers and horses, his dancers appear like from a few twists and whirls. He does not draw the dancer, but her movement. He is best known as a storyteller of the nightlife of Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec did not only picture the world of the dancers and prostitutes from outside view: he just lived in that world. He frequently charged a room in a brothel, where he made drawings of the prostitutes and their clientele. The men in his drawings and posters are often caricatures but, by contrast, the women are drawn with much warmth and empathy; with only a few pencil strokes Toulouse-Lautrec renders their mood and a character.

 •
Isaac Levitan was a classical Russian landscape painter who advanced the genre of the "mood landscape". His extremely influential art heritage consists of more than a 1000 paintings, pastels, graphics, and illustrations. Levitan's paintings were a deep response to the lyrical magic of the Russian landscape. He did not paint city landscapes; with few exceptions. During the late 1870s Levitan created the special option of the "landscape of mood", in which the shape and condition of nature are spiritualized, and become carriers of conditions of the human soul. Characteristic of his work is a hushed and nearly melancholic reverie amidst pastoral landscapes largely devoid of human presence. Though his late work displayed familiarity with Impressionism, his palette was generally muted, and his tendencies were more naturalistic and poetic than optical or scientific.

 •
Jean Frédéric Bazille was a French Impressionist artist. Many of his paintings are examples of figure compositions in which Bazille placed the subject figure within a landscape. His work is of interest for its exploration of the effects of light on flesh tones. Much of his work retained a high finish and dark palette (e.g. Negro Woman and Peonies, 1870). He was also a portraitist and recorder of the Impressionist scene. Bazille became interested in painting after seeing some works of Eugène Delacroix. His family agreed to let him study painting, but only if he also studied medicine. As a student in Paris he befriended Monet, Renoir, and Sisley. Attracted by the modernist tendencies of avant-garde art, they abandoned the studio in favor of direct observation of nature and gradually invented impressionism. From 1865 to 1866, he shared a studio with Monet and then the following year, shared a studio with Renoir. The work of Bazille was ended by his untimely de...

 •
Viktor Vasnetsov was a Russian artist who specialized in mythological and historical subjects. He is considered the co-founder of Russian folklorist and romantic modernist painting and a key figure in the revivalist movement. Vasnetsov started as a scene painter. In the early 1880s, he borrowed the subjects from ancient history and found another source of subjects in Russian mythology ? legends, ballads, fairy tales. Thus Vasnetsov became the founder of new style in Russian painting and wasn't only the first artist to use subjects from folklore, but also the first to borrow methods and techniques from national folk art. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Vasnetsov actively worked in different fields. During the last 20 years of his life he turned again to his favourite lyrical subjects inspired by Russian fairy-tales. His painting influenced greatly the development of modernism and symbolism in Russian painting and poetry.

Though he associated with innovative artists like Gustave Courbet, Eugene Delacroix and Edouard Manet, he was a traditionalist best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers. His portrait groups, reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch guild portraits, depict literary and artistic persons of the time; his flower paintings were especially popular in England, thanks to James McNeill Whistler and John Everett Millais, who found patrons to support him. In addition to his realistic paintings, Fantin-Latour created imaginative lithographs inspired by the music of some of the great classical composers.
