•
EZRA POUND (1885?1972) has been called a poetic visionary, and “the inventor of modern English poetry.”

Pound's lyric genius, superb technique, and profound insights ensured his reputation as one of the few men who throughout the centuries have kept poetry alive, ever growing and relevant.

In the early twentieth century, he was famous for the generosity with which he championed the work of such major contemporaries as Ernest Hemingway, William Carlos Williams, Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, T.S. Eliot, and James Joyce: he was singularly responsible for the publication in 1918 of Joyce’s Ulysses, and in 1915 of Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.

The verse and critical essays he produced during these years largely determined the directions of creative writing in our time; virtually every major poet in England and America today has acknowledged his influence.

Hemingway wrote: “The best of Pound's writing ? a...

 •
Drawing on Ezra Pound's notebooks, typescripts and contri-butions to periodicals, Posthumous Cantos is a selection of drafts and sketches that remained unpublished or uncollected in the poet's lifetime. The material spans the entire half-century of Pound's Cantos, 1915 to 1970, and includes newly-recovered passages he wrote in Italian in 1944-45, presented here in their original form alongside English translations. Accompanied by detailed introductory and explanatory notes and a full chronology, Posthumous Cantos offers new insight into the making of one of the twentieth century's most important and forbidding literary works, revealing it as an endless process of writing and rewriting, in which the poetry and the life are finally inextricable. This is a crucial part of the Pound canon, here made available for the first time in an English edition.

 •
This book uses Ezra Pound's The Cantos as a lens to understand modernism's ambition to revolutionize literature through mythical and scientific methods. Homer's Odyssey plays a unique methodological and structural role in The Cantos. The Cantos translates, interprets, abridges, adapts, critiques, parodies, trivializes, allegorizes, and “ritualizes” the Odyssey. Partly inspired by Joyce's use of different literary styles or “technics” in Ulysses, and partly inspired by medieval classicism and 19th century philology, Pound uses a plethora of methods to translate Homer and other classical texts. This book argues that The Cantos is a modernist vision of the Matter of Troy, a term used by medieval authors to designate the cycle of texts based on the Trojan war and its aftereffects, including the nostoi (returns) of the Greek heroes.

This is the first study to explore how medieval cl...

 •
First published in 1967, this is a study which tackles the central problem of meaning, within Ezra Pound's The Cantos. It deals with the question of important critical issues, as well as of interpretation and understanding. Students of modern poetry will derive great benefit from this vigorous and lucid analysis of Pound's masterpiece. Noel Stock's finding is radical: that The Cantos is not a really a poem at all, but rather notes towards a poem. It is a collection of fragments of varying quality - some of extraordinary power and beauty - but in no sense formed into a work of art.

 •
The instalments of Ezra Pound's life-project, The Cantos, composed during his incarceration in Washington after the Second World War were to have served as a "Paradiso" for his epic. Beautiful and tormented, enigmatic and irascible by turns, they express the poet's struggle to reconcile his striving for justice with his extreme Right politics. In heavily coded language, Pound was writing activist political poetry. Through an in-depth reading of the "Washington Cantos" this book reveals the ways in which Pound integrated into his verse themes and ideas that remain central to American far-right ideology to this day: States' Rights, White-supremacy and racial segregation, the usurpation of the Constitution by the Supreme Court, and history as racial struggle.

Pound's struggle was also personal. These poems also celebrate his passion for his muse and lover, Sheri Martinelli, as he tries to teach her his politics and, in the final poems, mount his legal defen...

 •
Despite the painstaking work of Pound scholars, the mythos of The Cantos has yet to be properly understood ー primarily because until now its occult sources have not been examined sufficiently. Drawing upon archival as well as recently published material, this study traces Pound’s intimate engagement with specific occultists (W.B. Yeats, Allen Upward, Alfred Orage, and G.R.S. Mead) and their ideas. The author argues that speculative occultism was a major factor in the evolution of Pound’s extraordinary aesthetic and religious sensibility, much noticed in Pound criticism.

The discussion falls into two sections. The first section details Pound’s interest in particular occult movements. It describes the tradition of Hellenistic occultism from Eleusis to the present, and establishes that Pound’s contact with the occult began at least as early as his undergraduate years and that he came to London already primed on the occult. Many of his London a...

 •

 •
Drawing extensively on archival research, The Late Cantos of Ezra Pound critically explores the textual history of Pound's late verse, namely Section: Rock-Drill (1955) and Thrones (1959). Examining unpublished letters, draft manuscripts and other prepublication material, this book addresses the composition, revision and dissemination of these difficult texts in order to shed new light on their significance to Pound's wider project, his methods and techniques, and the structures of authority-literary and political-that govern the meaning of his poetry. Illustrated by reproductions of archival documents, The Late Cantos of Ezra Pound is an innovative new study of one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
