•
First published in German in 1912 and translated into English in 1916, “Psychology of the Unconscious” is one of Carl Jung’s most important works. Jung was a promising young Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst when he caught the attention of Sigmund Freud. The two began a lengthy correspondence and Freud viewed Jung as the heir to his theory of the future of psychoanalysis. Jung’s views began to diverge from his mentor’s however and the publication of “Psychology of the Unconscious” was the formal end of their collaboration and friendship. Jung’s work delved deeply into the fantasies and mental visions of a patient that he believed had early signs of schizophrenia and concluded that these detailed historical fantasies revealed hidden sexual and psychic energies that took on symbolic forms in the patient’s conscious mind. Jung’s analysis laid the foundation for many of the theories that he would later become so famous for, such as the collective unconscious and archetypes. “Psy...

In 1902, he obtained his medical doctorate from the University of Zurich. He conducted extensive research under the supervision of psychologist Eugen Bleuler, who was a professor at the university. While collaborating with Freud, he began to study psychology in-depth. In 1908, at the age of 34, he co-founded the International Psychoanalytic Society with Freud. In 1912, after publishing \'Transformation and Symbolism of the Libido\', he ended his professional relationship with Freud due to differences in their views on the unconscious mind. At the age of 44 in 1918, he further developed his theory of in-depth psychology, introducing the concept of the \'collective unconscious.\' To study archetypes in the collective unconscious, he conducted comparative research in cultural and religious history. In 1930, he presented a paper that dis...

 •
Originally published in 1955, the blurb read: 'Again in this book the author expounds his main thesis ? perhaps the main thesis of all modern psychiatry ? namely that our conscious pre-occupations, thoughts and behaviour are merely the products or "symptoms" of a process that is going on within us (basically a physiological process) of which we are totally unconscious. Although we are at pains to conceal from ourselves and others, and even vehemently to deny, the nature and the very existence of this fundamental unconscious process, it is nevertheless the determinant of all that is us, biologically, psychologically and sociologically. In the author’s own words: "It is the force behind all activity, all life. It exists unseen in the most apparently superficial human relationship, even in the interview ? as this book will show. It alone can give us the meaning of what we do and feel."

The theoretical section of the book deals with the interviewer and the u...

In 1908, at the age of 34, he and Freud formed the International Psychoanalytic Society. In 1912, after publishing \'Transformation and Symbolism of the Libido\', he broke up with Freud due to differences in his views on the unconscious. At the age of 44 in 1918, he strengthened his own in-depth psychology by using the expression of ‘the prototype of collective unconsciousness.’ For the archetype study of collective unconsciousness, a comparative work between cultural and religious history is performed. In 1930, a paper dealing with the theoretical consideration of prototypes was presented. In 1935, he led the Eranos Conference, a group of scholars, and interacted wit...

 •
Originally published in 1940, this classic study of two schizophrenic case-histories further opened up the seemingly intractable problem of this condition; a task preceded by Jung’s own Psychology of Dementia Praecox. It was Baynes’s grasp of the meaning of the symbol coupled with his wide scholarship that enable him to explore the case-histories in such remarkable and fruitful depth, thus linking pathological psychology through graphic expression and the dream of the myths of mankind and the universal man. This was truly a scientific task.

In case 1, the series of dreams, fantasies and active imagination, fully illustrated by the patients’ spontaneous paintings, suggested to him a kind of mythological imagery. Baynes then demonstrates the emergence and development of a hero myth together with its therapeutic effect upon the patient, as an inner personal experience of death and rebirth.

Baynes also applied the methods of synthesis to the under...

 •
Psychological analysis usually sets its sights upon the patient or upon cultural phenomena such as myths, literature, or works of art. The essays in this volume, by contrast, have another addressee, another subject matter: psychology itself. Deeply informed by Jung’sinsight regarding the discipline’s lack of an objective vantage point outside and beyond the psyche, their Jungian author again and again turns Jung’s contribution to psychology around upon itself in the spirit of an immanent critique. Cutting to the quick, the question is put: in its constitution as psychology is Jungian psychology up to the level of what its insight into psychology’s lack of an Archimedean point would require? Are the interpretations it gives of its various subject mattersーalchemy, religion, the unconscious and the rest-matched by its interpretation of itself? Has its meeting itself in them had consequences for itself, consequences in terms of the fathoming of its own truth?</...

 •
Evidence is mounting that we are not as in control of our judgments and behavior as we think we are. Unconscious or ‘automatic’ forms of psychological and behavioral processes are those of which we tend to be unaware, that occur without our intention or consent, yet influence us on a daily basis in profound ways. Automatic processes influence our likes and dislikes for almost everything, as well as how we perceive other people, such as when we make stereotypic assumptions about someone based on their race or gender or social class. Even more strikingly, the latest research is showing that the aspects of life that are the richest experience and most important to us - such as emotions and our close relationships, as well as the pursuit of our important life tasks and goals - also have substantial unconscious components.

Social Psychology and the Unconscious: The Automaticity of Higher Mental Processes offers a state-of-the-art review of the evidence and th...

 •
A landmark work that marks the beginning of Jung’s divergence from the psychoanalytical school of Freud

Psychology of the Unconscious is a key text for understanding the formation of Jung’s ideas and his personal and psychological development at a crucial time in his life. In this influential book, Jung explores the fantasy system of Frank Miller, the young American woman whose account of her poetic and vivid mental images helped lead him to his redefinition of libido while encouraging his explorations in mythology. Miller’s fantasies, with their mythological implications, supported Jung’s notion that libido is not primarily sexual energy, as Freud had described it, but rather psychic energy in general, which springs from the unconscious and appears in consciousness as symbols. Jung shows how libido organizes itself as a metaphorical “hero,” who first battles for deliverance from the “mother,” the symbol of the unconscious, in order ...
