•
We work hard to build human connections and understanding. Empathy seems like a perfect tool to build our relationships. We feel pain when we see a loved one in pain. We feel joy when we see a family member graduating. Empathy seems to make sense. Empathy should be okay on the surface, but it's a train wreck. Our egos have pushed us to the point where it is detrimental. Instead of growing connections, it acts as a wedge. Instead of a deeper understanding of others, it causes us to focus on ourselves.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

 •
An ancient epic of the United States Pacific Northwest Coast Samish people, transcribed from a live event delivered by spiritual teacher and healer, Johnny Moses, whose traditional name is Whis.stem.men.knee, 'Walking Medicine Robe'. Johnny, a Tulalip Native American, master storyteller and oral historian, carries the Si.Si.Wiss, 'Sacred Breath, Sacred Life' teachings of his peoples. Here, he shares the story of a woman who wears beautiful Medicine Clothes. The woman wears different kinds of clothes when she visits the many different medicine people she is going to get help from, or those she will help.

'…Since the beginning of our culture, the First People (Native Americans) have maintained our tradition of storytelling. This was the primary tool for passing on information, for educating, for teaching the philosophy of our culture, for encouraging memory, for highlighting our humor, for focusing on our most talented historians. Johnny Moses brings to this generation...

 •
A striking and inventive social history of the role of clothing in the making of modern Americans.

While fashions of the rich and famous have been lushly chronicled, little attention has been paid to the meaning of clothes for everyone else. Yet between 1890 and the outbreak of World War II, as ready-to-wear came into its own, the clothes of ordinary Americans claimed the nation's attention. Allied with civic virtue, fashion now played an increasingly important role in shaping the national character.

Drawing on a wealth of sources -- from advertisements, trade journals, and health manuals to sermons, science, and songs -- acclaimed historian Jenna Weissman Joselit shows how the length of a woman's skirt, the shape of a man's hat, and the height of a pair of heels enabled Americans of every faith, color, and class to feel part of the modern nation. As moral arbiters warned that extravagant attire might undermine equality, and gentlemen worried that wearing ...

 •
For many years, scholars struggled to write the history of the constitution and political structure of the Holy Roman Empire. This book argues that this was because the political and social order could not be understood without considering the rituals and symbols that held the Empire together. What determined the rules (and whether they were followed) depended on complex symbolic-ritual actions. By examining key moments in the political history of the Empire, the author shows that it was a vocabulary of symbols, not the actual written laws, that formed a political language indispensable in maintaining the common order.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

 •
Do Angels Smooch? Do angels smooch? If not, why so much obsession in lyrics, movies and books about angels and kissing? Are there any more surprises that Edward Kapambwe unveils in his book? Well, there is more. For example, Kapambwe takes us into an in-depth angelic journey in order to understand the extent of angelic involvement in human affairs than ever before. He brings out novel elements that have never been unveiled previously. For example, he recounts how angels visit our stores. They buy the stuff they need before meeting people. Haven’t you noticed that no angel has ever appeared nude or with wings in real life. They come already dressed just like us; and that is why we have been unable to identify them. We are surrounded by angels both good and evil. Evil angels no longer transform themselves into humans. Only good angels still do. Since there are no shops in heaven, where do they get the stuff they wear? Besides that, what happens to these apparels after being used?...

The quest of Spirituality with Clothes On is to acknowledge that we do wear clothes; and, by examining them, we begin to understand ourselves and accept others who are wearing different outfits. We are what we wear: we cannot separate ourselves from our gender, personality, developmental stage, family, historical background, culture, or the difficult experiences of our lives. We need to acknowledge all these things, reflect on them--and sometimes even embrace them--in order to truly become ourselves.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

 •
Norena Shopland presents a provocative, eye-opening look at how women defied patriarchal societal expectations for personal freedom.

Traditionally, historic women have been seen as bound by social conventions, unable to travel unless accompanied and limited in their ability to do what they want when they want. But thousands of women broke those rules, put on banned clothing and traveled, worked and even lived whole lives as men. As access to novels and newspapers increased in the nineteenth century so did the number of women defying Biblical and social restrictions. They copied each other’s motives and excuses and moved into the world of men. Most were working-class women who either needed toーor wanted toーbreak away from constricted lives; women who wanted to watch a hanging or visit a museum, to see family or escape domestic abuse. Some wanted to earn a decent living when women’s wages could not keep a family. The reasons were myriad. Some wer...

 •
This book takes a new approach to the question, "Is the philosopher to be seen as universal human being or as eccentric?". Through a reading of the Theaetetus, Pappas first considers how we identify philosophers ? how do they appear, in particular how do they dress? The book moves to modern philosophical treatments of fashion, and of "anti-fashion". He argues that aspects of the fashion/anti-fashion debate apply to antiquity, indeed that nudity at the gymnasia was an anti-fashion. Thus anti-fashion provides a way of viewing ancient philosophy’s orientation toward a social world in which, for all its true existence elsewhere, philosophy also has to live.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。 ※ご購入は、楽天kobo商品ページからお願いします。※切り替わらない場合は、こちら をクリックして下さい。 ※このページからは注文できません。

 •
Fashion is all around us: we see it, we buy it, we read about it, but most people know little about fashion as a business. Veronica Manlow considers the broader signifi cance of fashion in society, the creative process of fashion design, and how fashion unfolds in an organizational context where design is conceived and executed. To get a true insider's perspective, she became an intern at fashion giant Tommy Hilfi ger. Th ere, she observed and recorded how a business's culture is built on a brand that is linked to the charisma and style of its leader.

Fashion firms are not just in the business of selling clothing along with a variety of sidelines. Th ese companies must also sell a larger concept around which people can identify and distinguish themselves from others. Manlow defi nes the four main tasks of a fashion fi rm as creation of an image, translation of that image into a product, presentation of the product, and selling the product. Each of these processes is ...

 •
Jim Mays Spinmeisters is the first commentary of its kind in the world of literature. It may likely become the definitive work describing message management or, as he describes it in many helpful examples throughout the book, the art of conditioning a narrative for the purpose of influencing others. He demonstrates this in all facets of life including areas where you would obviously expect to find it such as advertising and politics for sure, but also hidden subliminally in other everyday occurrences within government policies or lack thereof, business, religion and health influences. As the subtitle might infer, he explains that there is more than one way to say something, and homage is paid to those artful few who are able to grasp a subject and restate its meaning in a twist to serve their particular purpose; that is, beyond the temporal abilities of mere mortals. These masters of persuasion, especially those who plot and plan specific effects, are highly regarded in their f...

 •
As I reflected on these sermons from the Book of James, I was reminded of something from my post-Depression childhood. My parents were poor, but that didnt bother us much because almost everyone we knew was as poor as we were. We lived on a farm and were fortunate in that we always had food to eat; but we didnt always have good clothes to wear. In fact, we had two kinds of clothes. We had what we called our Sunday go-to-meetin clothes, which were the best we had; we kept them to wear to church on Sunday. Then we had our clothes that we only wore during the week for work and play. These were not as good or nice as our Sunday clothes. In the vernacular of rural Alabama in the mid-1930s we referred to them as our everday clothes. The expression everday clothes reminds me of the Book of James. Prehistory and protohistory of ancient civilizations | Starting with the analysis of a recent discovery in an Orientalising necropolis at Veii, and by re-examining some new and old discoveries of textiles from female Etruscan and Latial tombs, this paper aims to define the female ceremonial dress between the Late Iron Age and the Orientalising age. This dress, which takes on a symbolic significance in special occasions and rites of passages of aristocratic life (marriage, death, birth), was used to affirm the gender identity acknowledged by the community. Women enhanced their beauty by wearing precious jewellery and garments enriched by the application of decorative glass and amber beads, pendants and metal plaques, studs and buttons, but these accoutrements also underlined their wealth and social status. ...

 •
David Franklin Stark was born in Highland County, Ohio in 1851. His father moved the family to a farm near Lexington, Illinois in 1857. A long economic depression began in 1873 with a banking collapse and thousands of men became unemployed, lost farms, and generally became indigent. David left home looking for work and ended up in Nashville, Tennessee where, out of desperation, he joins the army in March 1875. However, family history has him as a cowboy on the Great Western Cattle Trail for some of that time. To get him from 1875 to 1887, the author has created people, conversations, letters, and places to move him from Nashville to Ozark County. All persons and events that cannot be documented are referenced in the end notes. Additional facts may come to light that suggest a different scenario than the one purposed by the author. He deserted on August 14,1875 from Nashville, Tennessee. He was never captured nor court martialed. He is never again to appear in official records a...
